Interview with Ian Hodder

Abstract

Ian Hodder and Joan Marler discuss the reopening of the excavation at Çatalhöyük, and  new interpretations of the burials and Çatalhöyük social structure.  They also discuss some of the new discoveries, and Hodder’s view of the symbolic imagery, including the wall paintings, bas reliefs and figurines, in contrast to previous interpretations by James Mellaart and Marija Gimbutas. This interview was conducted in the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology at Stanford University, October 30, 2006.
