Circling Marija’s World
A Journey Through Art

Christopher Castle (England / USA)

Visual artist Christopher Castle writes: “How could we have known in 1970s and 80s that the seeds represented by Marija Gimbutas’ life’s work in unifying the complex story of Eastern European archaeology—quite unlike the more circumscribed mentality of her contemporaries—would bring a whole new audience to archaeology. Artists, philosophers, futurists and feminists have been drawn into her brilliant aura and have begun to see the importance of her reading of the ancient past.”

In this article, illustrated by his own artwork, Chris Castle describes his lifelong exploration of ancient knowledge embedded in archaeological sites which evoke images of the goddess or female spirit that universally underlies the cosmology of the ancient world. Moreover, finding the work of Marija Gimbutas and coming to know her as a friend has had a profound influence on his life as an artist.
