Some Goddess Hills In Britain

Michael Dames (England)

Marija Gimbutas successfully integrated Neolithic archaeology, archaic art, craft, etymology, and surviving folklore in order to investigate the cultural synthesis inherent in goddess-based mythic narratives. She appreciated that the remarkable cohesion of Neolithic symbolism was rooted in a respect for Nature, supernaturally envisaged. In particular, Gimbutas saw how the Earth, as giver and taker of life, had long been worshipped.

In this essay Michael Dames revisits some of Britain’s topographical features where traces of Mother Goddess beliefs and ceremonies have survived into relatively recent times.
